Two hours that could change the way you see the world — and your place in it.
This isn’t a computer science class. We won’t be talking about algorithms or code. We’ll be talking about your life — your health, your family, your safety, and the things that matter to you.
Artificial Intelligence is already part of everyday life. The good news? You don’t need to understand how it works to benefit from what it can do.
By the end of this two-hour session, you’ll feel comfortable, curious, and confident — ready to try it yourself.
We’ve designed every minute to be engaging, practical, and enjoyable — with plenty of time for questions.
Researched and chosen based on what matters most to people 65+ in today’s world. Each one is practical, empowering, and immediately useful.
AI tools like ChatGPT or Claude can hold a real conversation with you. Ask a question in plain English and get a clear, helpful answer — no search engines, no scrolling through pages of results. In this section, you’ll practice asking AI to explain things, give advice, tell you about local services, and much more. You’ll be amazed how natural it feels.
Scammers are now using AI to make fake phone calls that sound exactly like your grandchild in trouble, or emails that look perfectly real. These are called “deepfakes” and they’re becoming increasingly common. You’ll learn the warning signs, how to pause and verify, and simple habits that keep you and your family protected — without becoming suspicious of everything.
Medical information can be confusing and overwhelming. AI can help you understand what your doctor told you, explain what a medication does, or help you prepare a list of questions before your next appointment. We’ll also look at how AI can support mental wellness, find local health resources, and keep track of important information — all in a way that supports your relationship with your doctor, not replaces it.
Whether you need to write a heartfelt letter to a grandchild, respond to a confusing email from a company, or draft a note to a neighbour — AI can help you find the right words every time. Simply describe what you want to say, and AI drafts it for you. You review, adjust, and send. No more staring at a blank screen or worrying about grammar and tone.
AI can restore and enhance old, faded family photographs — bringing faces back to life with clarity and colour. It can also help you write down family stories, explore your genealogy, create greeting cards, and discover new hobbies. This section is about joy. You’ll see how AI can help you preserve the past and enrich the present in deeply personal ways.
The Okanagan Regional Library’s free MakerSpaces are a perfect next step after this workshop. Use what you learn about AI to create, record, print, and make — all at no cost with your library card.
Use AI to write a script — a family history, a wellness tip series, or a personal story — then bring it to life in the MakerSpace’s professional Audio Recording Studio. No experience needed.
Learn to spot manipulated images yourself. The Creation Station gives you access to Adobe Photoshop — so you can see how fake images are made, and learn to recognise them instantly.
Use AI to research and organise your health information, then design a clear, personalised medication tracker or wellness booklet using Adobe InDesign or Illustrator at the Creation Station.
Let AI write the perfect message, then use the Cricut Maker to cut personalised greeting cards, labels, gift tags, or home décor — a lovely handmade touch with AI-crafted words inside.
Bring in old VHS tapes, photo slides, vinyl records, or cassettes and the MakerSpace will digitise them for you. Once digitised, use AI to restore and enhance photos — then print them on mugs, coasters, or t-shirts as keepsake gifts.
Ask AI to describe or sketch a simple object — a name plaque, a plant pot, a keepsake — then bring that design to life on the library’s 3D printer. A surprisingly satisfying creative experience.
All equipment is free with your ORL library card. Booking required — reserve up to 2 days ahead at orl.libcal.com or call your branch.
